I am a structural engineer in Australia working on understanding steel material requirements around the world. A question I am trying to answer is:
"Does Eurocode 3 specifically require that steel conforming to EN 10025 be used? (i.e. could alternate steel specifications be applied, such as ASTM or JIS etc.)"
Thanks,
John Kremer

Dear John,
tricky question.
The strict answer is that EC3 is part of a set of harmonised codes. Furthermore the development of the EC's is supported by research. This limits the use of the EC's to the limits used in research (e.g. the use of high strength steel requires extra set of rules to be found in EN 1993-1-12)
The practical answer of a structural engineer with experience outside Europe would be "yes, but".
Chapter 3 of EN 1993-1-1 gives you what the requirements are for structural steel to be used (for steel up to S460).
Don't forget to ask clients of competent authority permission.
Best regards |

hi there, wondering if you can help me. I am writing a dissertation if you have any info on the "Comparison of BS5950 and EC3 codes for steelwork design" If you have any documents, books, manuals etc which might be of help.
Regards
